RI Homeschool Legislative Announcement H8531
RI Introduces Bill H8531 Proposing Revised Homeschool Regulations

On May 8, 2026 legislation was introduced in Rhode Island that would add new restrictions related to homeschooling in certain circumstances. The bill, H8531, includes provisions connected to families involved in truancy proceedings and situations involving withdrawal to homeschool when there are certain criminal or civil charges against a parent or guardian.
We want the homeschool community to know that both ENRICHri and RIGHT are already reviewing this legislation carefully and are working closely together on this issue along with HSLDA as we evaluate the bill and prepare for the upcoming legislative process.
At this stage, the most important thing families can do is stay informed and remain calm. Bills are introduced every legislative session, and the hearing process is where advocacy and community engagement matter most.
Community support will be vital as this bill moves forward, including potentially attending a State House hearing once a date is scheduled. We will share updates, analysis, and clear guidance as more information becomes available.
For now, please know that your state advocacy organizations are actively engaged, paying close attention, and committed to keeping Rhode Island homeschool families informed every step of the way. The homeschool community has faced challenges before, and through steady advocacy, unity, and informed involvement, we have protected homeschool freedom time and again. While the road is not always smooth, we will continue doing the work necessary to defend and preserve the rights of Rhode Island homeschool families.
We know this legislation will likely be widely discussed on social media in the coming days. If you have questions or concerns, we encourage you to contact us directly.
